Xander Kostroma Supports Peatland Restoration and Conservation in Indonesia
Peatlands are among the most valuable ecosystems on Earth, storing massive amounts of carbon and supporting rich biodiversity. Despite covering just 3% of the Earth’s surface, they store more carbon than all other vegetation types combined. However, these unique habitats are increasingly being destroyed, releasing stored carbon into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide.
Indonesia, home to 36% of the world’s tropical peatlands, has seen significant destruction of these ecosystems to make room for plantation crops like oil palm and acacia. From 2000 to 2015, the country lost an average of 498,000 hectares of forest each year.
In response to this crisis, the Katingan Mentaya Restoration and Conservation Project was established in the Central Kalimantan Province of Indonesian Borneo. This ambitious project aims to protect and restore 149,800 hectares of peatland ecosystem. The project employs satellite monitoring and fire management to protect existing peatland forests, and intensive peatland rewetting activities to restore degraded areas.
The project pursues three core goals:
- Climate Change Mitigation: Protecting the carbon stored within peatlands to prevent its release into the atmosphere.
- Biodiversity Protection: Safeguarding the rich biodiversity of the region, including 44 critically endangered or vulnerable species.
- Community Well-being: Improving the well-being and sustainable economic prospects of the 49,000 people in 39 villages through various initiatives.
